Southampton UFO group (UK) is no more

Posted by dandare on January 9, 2008

The Southampton UFO group, which has been in existance for almost 20 years (i believe 17 years to be precise) has decided to quit. see “UFO club calls it a day” (posted 8th january 2008).

This is a shame (and i feel saddened by this), as it seems like the UK ufo groups, are dissappearing quickly, but i feel that the internet is part of the reason why this is happening.

Sobeps, famed for its investigation of the black triangle incidents in Belgium, recently decided to quit as well. The (un)official reason was : “lack of funds due to lack of members due to lack of sightings”.
The internet is definiately part of the reason why this is happening. Now, people have access to a wide variety of (free) ufo-information. In the late 80′s early 90′s, people (including myself) bought books and magazines that were published by UFO-organisations. The profits generated from these publications were used to do more field work. Without sales and profits, no field work can be done… It’s that simple. I have 2 books published by sobeps – “Vague d’OVNI sur la Belgique I & II” – (or UFO wave above Belgium) and those books surpass anything I have read so far.

Thanks again steve… very valid comments. :)

Yes, the Southampton UFO Group closed its files on the 1st January 2008 after some 18 years of investigation. UFO groups survive on support from its members and sadly, this was why the group folded. The founder could no longer run a group with very little support from its members and something had to give. BUT, the groups magazine SUFOG is still being published and in September 2008 will be relaunched under a different banner. UFOlogy is not dead, but British UFOlogy is slidding into a very very deep black hole and one, that I feel it will never see the light of day from.
