Recently declassified files reveal that 285 UFO sightings were reported to the Ministry Of Defence (MoD) in 2008 – twice the number in the previous year.

Dr Who link to UFO sighting rise (BBC 8th April 2009) *not referring to a particular UFO file release, but more general

_45643393_torchwoodScience fiction and fantasy dramas like Doctor Who and Torchwood may be behind a rise in UFO sightings in built up areas of Wales, an expert has said.

Nick Pope, the Ministry of Defence’s (MoD) former UFO project head, was commenting on figures released by the MoD which show sightings have gone up.

He said other sightings reflected the growing popularity of Chinese lanterns.

In 2006, 97 UFOs were reported across the UK. This rose to 135 in 2007 and 285 in 2008, with 18 Wales sightings.

seal ufo truthA photo of a UFO hovering next to an RAF jet over Scotland was treated seriously, newly-released Ministry of Defence files show.

Officials briefed ministers on the sighting of a diamond-shaped object near Pitlochry, Perthshire, in 1990.

A memo suggested the media be told “no definite conclusions” could be reached.

The documents show officials were more concerned about secret weapons being developed by other countries rather than alien visitors.

The sightings were brought to the attention of the MoD by the Daily Record newspaper.

He is said to have seen a yellow light four storeys high, which made a high-pitched noise “like cats wailing” and fired beams at a railway line.

According to the police log the bright yellow light followed the youngster as he crossed a footbridge from Avondale Drive into Upton.

_46218820_close_rex466Newly released documents show that UFO sightings in the UK leapt five-fold in the same year that the alien invader blockbuster Independence Day was released. So is there a link between UFOs and science-fiction?

_46218596_ufo_466In 1996, the Earth was under attack from an alien mothership. Do you remember?

Fortunately, Will Smith was on hand to save the planet. This did happen. At least in cinemas.

Independence Day was the blockbuster film of the year, but the fiction it portrayed may have had an impact on the real world – a huge jump in the number of reported sightings of UFOs.

Among them are details of how the Ministry of Defence (MoD) received reports of a large, triangular unidentified flying object hovering in the sky above Mr Howard’s home near Folkestone, Kent, on 8 March 1997.

Government correspondence, local newspaper reports and details of an RAF investigation into the sighting all feature in the files.

The bookie said it would not pay up as the United Nations had not confirmed the existence of extraterrestrials.

Churchill ordered UFO cover-up, National Archives show (BBC 5th August 2010)

_48592278_48592279The government took the threat of UFOs so seriously in the 1950s that UK intelligence chiefs met to discuss the issue, newly-released files show.

Ministers even went on to commission weekly reports on UFO sightings from a committee of intelligence experts.

The papers also include a wartime account claiming prime minister Winston Churchill ordered a UFO sighting be kept secret to prevent “mass panic”.

The files show reports of UFOs peaked in 1996 – when The X Files was popular.

The Joint Intelligence Committee is better known for providing briefings to the government on matters relating to security, defence and foreign affairs.

But the latest batch of UFO files released from the Ministry of Defence to the National Archives shows that, in 1957, the committee received reports detailing an average of one UFO sighting a week.

_51505590_1967hoaxIntelligence papers on a reported UFO sighting known as the “Rendlesham incident” have gone missing, files from the National Archives reveal.

The missing files relate to a report of mysterious lights from US servicemen at RAF Woodbridge in Suffolk in 1980.

The disappearance came to light with the release of 8,000 previously classified documents on UFOs.

Officials found a “huge” gap where defence intelligence files relating to the case should be, the papers show.

Is the truth about UFOs out there? (BBC 3rd march 2011)

_51491818_009954085-1There is a standard letter, which is found throughout the files with minor variations, which was sent to hundreds of people who entered into correspondence with the government about unusual phenomenon.

There was also a desk set up at the RAF which sometimes dealt with unidentified flying objects (UFOs) and their possible implications for air defence. Officials who were devoted to defence intelligence also dealt with UFOs from time to time.

So the government has felt the urge to go through the motions for UFOs – even if there was a definite lack of actual spacecraft buzzing over Whitehall.

Newly released government files on UFOs show a lack of will and resources to study thousands of reported sightings.

The Ministry of Defence files released by the National Archives cover reported sightings of UFOs from 1985 to 2007.

In one, a military officer predicts embarassment if the public discovered a “lack of funds and higher priorities” were stopping UFO investigations.

The 34 files include sightings of lights over Glastonbury and a “flying saucer” in Nottinghamshire.

_54524650_alexpicOn 27 January 2004 there was a light snowfall in Nottinghamshire. Alex Birch, a local photographer, grabbed his camera. He wanted to take a picture of his local town hall, Retford, for a competition.

He got the shot – the picturesque winter scene you can see above – and he says he did not notice anything out of the ordinary. When he developed the picture though he saw a clear flying saucer shape.

This was not the first time Alex had taken a picture of a UFO. In 1962, as a 14 year-old schoolboy, he had taken a picture which showed five saucer shaped objects in the distance.

These are just three of the cases uncovered in files released by the National Archives examining UFO sightings across Wales.

The papers span four decades, and include nearly 7,000 documents.

But one of the biggest Welsh UFO mysteries, the ‘Dyfed Triangle’, may have been an elaborate practical joke.

It is the latest in a growing number of documents released detailing the UK’s obsession with claims of extra-terrestrial sightings that began to surge in post-war Britain.

The papers reveal that between 1996 and 2008, more than 20 detailed sightings were reported to the police and Ministry of Defence in Wales.

_61512693_flyingsaucersPrime Minister Tony Blair was briefed on the UK’s files about UFO sightings in 1998, newly declassified MoD documents have revealed.

Writer Nick Redfern urged him to “consider making available for public scrutiny all of the many and varied UFO reports compiled by the government”.

The request came as the government began to implement Freedom of Information (FOI requests).

Some 6,700 pages of UFO documents have been released by the National Archives.

The documents also include details of a briefing made before a House of Lords debate on UFOs in 1979, and reveal that former prime minister John Major had been asked by a fellow MP in 1996 whether the government would set up a national inquiry into UFO sightings.

What was it really like working on UK’s ‘X-Files’ ? (BBC 12th July 2012)

_61506881_closeencountersFiles released by the National Archives reveal for the first time detail of the role of UFO Desk officers, what they really thought about the possibility of alien visits, and their briefings to Tony Blair on UFO policy.

Between 1950 and 2009 a special Ministry of Defence unit investigated more than 10,000 UFO “sightings” – a rate of one every two days.

Most, it appears from papers released on Thursday, had an everyday explanation, from aircraft, to balloons, reflected lights or other innocent activity.

One of the newly-released papers, from December 2008, shortly before the desk was transferred to the RAF’s Air Command, indicates what life was like for those posted to UFO duties.

The National Archives, Kew, London. (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

There is a wealth of information out there on the UFO Files from the MOD, some good and some less so, including videos, audio and great articles on them. I have decided to put them into three part’s.

There were ten batches of files released to the public by the MOD.

David Clarke has a wealth of information on his site

UFO File Release 2008

National Archives UFO Files #1

The first release covers UFO reports, policy and public correspondence between 1978 and 1987. Four of the eight files originate with the MoD Air Staff secretariats DS8 and Sec(AS). These have become well known to UFO researchers and the media as the MoD’s ‘UFO desk’. (released may 2008)

National Archives UFO Files #2

On 20 October 2008 the UK National Archives opened a second collection of UFO files covering seven years of sightings reported to the Ministry of Defence. Covering the years 1986 through to 1992 this tranche contains some 4,500 pages of material, spread across 19 separate files. (released october 2008).

National Archives UFO Files #3

This tranche consists of seven files containing more than 2,000 pages of material. Six of the files contain UFO reports copied to the MoD’s secretive Defence Intelligence branch DI55, between November 1987 and April 1993. During this period 1200 individual sightings were reported to the authorities.(released march 2009).

National Archives UFO files #4

Well, the collection includes a hefty correspondence file (DEFE 24/1970) containing letters to MoD from MPs and a number of well-known UFOlogists between 1985 and 1995. There are complete dossiers on classic cases such as Rendlesham, the ‘Cosford incident’ and the Belgian UFO flap, along with six whole files packed with UFO sighting reports.(released August 2009).

National Archives UFO files #5

There are 24 files in this tranche containing more than 6,000 pages of documents spanning 1994-2000. The correspondence files span the period 1994-99 and the UFO report files begin in August 1996 and end in September 2000. (released February 2010).

National Archives UFO files #6

The release includes 18 files containing 5000 pages of correspondence and Parliamentary briefings created by the Ministry of Defence between 1995 and 2000. The documents provide a unique historical snapshot of the extraordinary beliefs, legends and rumours that were held and spread by UFOlogists around the time of the 50th anniversary of the birth of the subject in 1997. (released August 2010).

ufo file release august 2010

National Archives UFO files #7

A number of papers in this tranche of files reveal the MoD destroyed whole collections of UFO files as recently as 1990 for reasons they could not explain  They were reluctant to publicly admit they had destroyed files as they feared this might add fuel to allegations they were involved in a cover-up. They were right! (released march 2011).

National Archives UFO Files #8

On 11 August 2011 The National Archives opened 34 formerly secret Ministry of Defence UFO files…..[..].. In my opinion these papers provide the most detailed and revealing insight into British government UFO policy in the decade before the closure of the MoD’s UFO desk in 2009. (released August 2011).

National Archives UFO Files #9

The ninth collection of UFO files were released by the UK Government on 12 July 2012….[..].Possibly the most revealing document was written by the last incumbent of the MoD’s UFO desk, and can be found at the end of UFO policy file DEFE 24/2087/1, p5-7. (released July 2012).

National Archives UFO files #10

This fully revised and expanded edition is the first comprehensive history of the MoD’s UFO investigation unit.  Although official investigations began in the 1950s when Winston Churchill demanded to know ‘the truth’ about UFOs, this book reveals official interest stretched back to before the First World War. (released September 2012).

The video can be seen here

I start with the references to David Clarke, mainly because without him, the files probably would not have been released.

The Clarke references above link to the National Archives, and you will now have to pay to download them.[in part 3 i will try and indicate were they can be downloaded for free on the internet-hopefully i can find them all].

Definately worth a look, as it describes all that are in the files and is a wealth of information.

In Part 2, i will be putting up the many BBC articles on the UFO files and other refences to the UFO files from media sources.

Is Nick Pope to be trusted as a ufologist?

Posted by dandare on December 22, 2012

SNN20UFO-682_512184a

Due to recent links to Nick Pope in leading newspapers, i feel it is time to tackle the subject of whether Nick Pope is a trusted and informed ufologist…. The recent articles can be seen in the sun ” The truth is out there “, the daily mail  “Keep an eye on the skies for saucers during the olympic games, warns former MOD UFO expert ” (just a PR stunt).

As far back as 2009, i wrote a blog article about Nick Pope, and have decided to reproduce it below….

March 31st 2009

the-truth-is-out-there-ufo-sightings-over-britain-double-in-a-single-year3-mail-online_1234556845921

Nick Pope seems to come out with amazing statements, but not back them up with anything substantial, or base them on any facts at all.

His latest statement to The sun’s article ” Google Unearthed“  (posted 30th March, 2009) was:

” Yesterday baffled ufologist Nick Pope said he was “very excited” by the image, which he labelled “truly fascinating”.
He added: “It appears to show nine objects flying in near perfect formation. About the only thing I know that can do this is the Red Arrows — and it’s not them” ” (extract from article). Ironically at Above top secret, there is a possibility that they are either jets, (including red arrows) or balloons : see Here and Here . Also they point out that google started mapping London out in 2008. One possibility could be that it was the Queen’s birthday fly past see here. Again i say possibilities, and as such should be presented as such.

English: The pilots of the Red Arrows line up for an official photo after their display. Taken by Adrian Pingstone at Kemble Airfield, Gloucestershire, England in June 2004 and released to the public domain. (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

You can see the google map in question here . I did notice that the next camera to the right, has (looking at the skyline) an aerial dissected half way up, and am unsure how this was caused (unless it was collected at two separate times, for instance).

Anyway, it soon finds its way into many newspapers and media outlets, but why? Again, i say why is this an amazing image….. to me one answer could be that it’s an image malfunction. I’m not saying that it should not be discussed, but the way it is being put ‘out there ‘ is getting sad, and there are better cases that should be discussed/ talked about in a rational way, but i guess it does not sell papers.

I will within the next week or so, put together an article, on why i have come to this conclusion about Nick Pope, and give my reasons with background information.

For example, i wrote about  ” Is nick Pope being GULLable towards UFO sighting? ” in which the image was clearly a seagull (or Unidentified Feathered Object).

Although i’m not saying that you can get everything right, he does not seem to be learning from his mistakes, or even looking at the evidence with a clear head, and reasserting his answers to these questions.

Of course, sometimes all you can give are a series of alternatives (ie what they could be), and leave it at that.

Therefore we have to ask what are his motives in all this? Maybe i’m reacting to strongly to all this, possibly, but i do believe it is more sensationalism again.

windturbineartufoThe Sun newspaper is also proving to not be interested in the truth about UFOs whatsoever, and sooner the rest of the media realize this the better. For instance, the latest wind Turbine incident is a good example of hype by them.

I would be interested to find out what you think of Nick Pope? is he a reliable source of information on UFOs, and Ufology as a whole.

I only bring this whole subject up, because i wonder why some  people are surprised, when they ask ” why is ufology not taken seriously”.

This asked some serious questions back in 2009, and they are still relevant now…..

Also similar questions were raised at forgetomori  (in 2009) ” UFO fleet menaces east London?nah ” among other blogs.

Main Building—The Headquarters of the Ministry...

Main Building—The Headquarters of the Ministry of Defence, Whitehall, Westminster, London (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

So let’s backtrack a bit here, and examine Nick’s time at the MOD.

Nick Pope claims that he  was the man “who used to run the British Government’s UFO Project” (from 1991-1994); and that he was responsible for these ufo reports. Please see Dr David Clarke for a detailed description in his blog article “Open Skies- closed Files” . This asks serious question of Nick’s involvement in the role he played with UFO’s and the MOD.

SecretfileIt is telling that the MOD have mentioned that there is no such thing as the UFO project. Many more questions arise from this as well? mainly what role did he play? why does he block details? has he something to hide..was he really only there in a part-time capacity? Also over at ufo-blog.co.uk the same analysis has taken place for this article please see here .

So basically what I’m saying is that there is very strong evidence to suggest,  he was a low-level clerk at the MOD, that i believe was only part-time … he lives on the Mulder image, and he still claims he was the chief investigator without backing this up with any hard proof.

ufo online55555After he left the MOD in the 1990′s, he mentioned that he had never seen anything out of the ordinary. Recently this has all changed-to suit his own agenda – money talks.

He also spends a lot of time contradicting himself, never really researching properly…but unfortunately the media love it, as it sells papers (and most of the tabloids are not interested in the truth).Nick Pope also loves it as it keeps him in the limelight.

Other links of interest  :

*** this was dated from 1999 and is very telling about alot of things that Nick Pope said in the UFO magazine at the time, plus other comments. The link can be seen at  sightings (rense.com) and confirms alot of the contradictions that are mentioned above *****.

For example:

Although Nick Pope hasn’t to my knowledge responded to these questions and is of course absolutely under no obligation to, I have now received a reply from ‘Secretariat(Air Staff)2a’ concerning some of the aforementioned questions.

The Ministry state:

“Mr Pope was employed as an Executive Officer in Secretariat (Air Staff) 2. His post was designated Sec(AS)2a.

The main duties of the post concern non-operational RAF activities overseas and diplomatic clearance for military flights abroad”.

It would therefore appear that Nick Pope’s principal function was generally more mundane than “researching and investigating UFO sightings, alien abductions, crop circles, animal mutilations and any other weird and wonderful reports that came my way” [extract from article].

UFO Talk – No hope for pope

Colin Andrew’s concerns here

Richard Dolan calls out Nick Pope

bad UFOs – Skepticism, UFOs and the Universe

Ok, I’ll lay it on the line and say that i have not been a fan of Nick Pope for quite a while. His brand of sensationalism is a joke and makes Ufology look pathetic.

I hear you say, that i should keep my prejudice out of this, and i usually do, however I actually despair with the whole Nick pope image. If nothing else it gives Ufology an even worse reputation than it already has.

World UFO Sightings [August 2009] Updated regularly

Posted by dandare on October 11, 2009

aliens7

Many of the sightings reported are sensationalized, with usually alot of information missing.

Please keep this in mind as you view these postings from the local and national press.

I’m afraid many also fail to follow up on their initial leads, and many reports just remain forgotten.ufo-chinese-lantern-mystery.jpg.display

Some incidents could be UFO balloons (please see:  http://dandare.wordpress.com/2007/05/19/ufo-balloons-what-are-they/ for more details, from a previous article).

There are also many other IFOs ( Identified Flying Objects they could be as well).

However, as i have said before, i am not sure what value they are to any UFO research.

Please be patient whilst i catch up on information/links/articles…. thank you.

***Third instalment of Uk UFO Files by MOD available to download NOW (march 21st 2009) ***

Posted by dandare on March 22, 2009

secretfileThe third instalment of the UFO files, covering the years 1989 to 1993, are available to be downloaded online from the MOD, at the National Archives website ( seven to be made available to download over a 3 year period).

The Ministry Of Defence will make these available to be downloaded for the next month only…. then a fee will need to be paid to download them after this date. So please go and download them as soon as possible please ( i am however, working on placing the files on a downloadable site, to make available to all, but this is a work in progress).

ufo-headerThe download page is available from http://ufos.nationalarchives.gov.uk/ .

The files contain a wide range of UFO-related documents covering the years 1987–1993. If you want to find out more about close encounters over Heathrow Airport, alien abductions, stray satellites – and what the UK Government thought of it all – then this is the place to be. The files are in PDF format ” (extract from article).

A brief description of the files can be seen here .

I will also add media + video  links to this as and when available.

Dr David Clarke’s post ” National Archives release UFO files #3 ” (posted 21st march, 2009)

What’s more, it’s clear from the scribbles visible on these papers that details of the individual sightings they contained were entered into a computerised database which DI55 were secretly using to search for patterns in sighting data. The most intriguing incident involving such a craft occurred at 9pm on 4 August 1990, at Calvine, a remote hamlet near Pitlochry in Scotland. According to the brief details released by the MoD, witnesses saw a diamond-shaped UFO hovering for about 10 minutes before it disappeared upwards at high speed. During the incident, Harrier jump jets were seen making a number of low-level passes. Colour photographs reveal both the UFO and at least one of the jets ” (extract from article).

The Times “ Is that a flying saucer? No, it’s a stealth bomber“(posted 22nd march, 2009)

At the end of the cold war, the Ministry of Defence was worried that America was developing mysterious planes but not telling its closest ally. The Australian “ UFOs or the old spy in the sky trick? ” (posted 22nd march,2009 )

The files settle a long-standing UFO conspiracy theory on the death of American fighter pilot Captain William Schaffner during an exercise over the North Sea in 1970. To the distress of his family, some have claimed that officials covered up a sinister incident possibly involving a UFO. The files include the RAF’s official inquiry into the crash, which concluded Schaffner’s Lightning fighter had brushed the sea during a delicate, low-speed manoeuvre. When he tried to eject, the cockpit canopy remained stuck because of poor maintenance, and Schaffner was believed to have drowned ” (extract from article). Similar facts to those above.

UFO experts at ‘The Sun’ cover David Cameron’s comments on UFOs

Posted by dandare on January 27, 2009

david-cameronHere we go again, with the UK media ‘experts’ The Sun, proclaiming ” David Cameron in UFO Files promise “.

Speaking at one of his regular Cameron Direct meetings, at which he takes questions from the public, the Conservative leader promised to be “entirely open and frank” about what the Government knows about close encounters.

At the forum in Tynemouth, North Tyneside, he was questioned about a spate of mysterious incidents ” (extract from article). It mentions that a member of the audience (that person is Richard Hall, not mentioned by The Sun) asks him several questions.

He replies with the standard political response, that of course, we will be as open as possible….. a flavour of his answer can be seen below:

“But I think we should be a open as possible, so I would be quite happy to give you a guarantee that if I became prime minister I would always be entirely open and frank about these things.

“I don’t think any of us have any clue whether there’s intelligent life out there and it is certainly not something that any Government should seek to hide from anyone” ” (extract from article). This does however show, that he has little, if no real understanding of the UFO subject.

where have we heard that one before; Also to see the whole thing on video please see below:

The Sun seem to want to print everything about UFOs, with or without facts, proof or any type of indepth discussion about the subject. For instance , in this article they have not gone further than the you tube video, and just quoted cameron, and that’s it basically. It’s lazy journalism.

Alos why have they labelled it with UFO Files; do they not know that these ‘UFO files’ are starting to come out; 2 batches of files have come out by the MOD, with more to follow.

What do you think The Sun is playing at? are they experts in Ufology? are they trying to increase readership? is Cameron real in his belief? do you want him in charge of the country???

The MOD has released the second batch of UFO files (the 1st was in May 2008 ), consisting of 19 files (800.8mb in all) , and available to download from the National Archives .
