Is Nick Pope to be trusted as a ufologist?

Posted by dandare on December 22, 2012

SNN20UFO-682_512184a

Due to recent links to Nick Pope in leading newspapers, i feel it is time to tackle the subject of whether Nick Pope is a trusted and informed ufologist…. The recent articles can be seen in the sun ” The truth is out there “, the daily mail  “Keep an eye on the skies for saucers during the olympic games, warns former MOD UFO expert ” (just a PR stunt).

As far back as 2009, i wrote a blog article about Nick Pope, and have decided to reproduce it below….

March 31st 2009

the-truth-is-out-there-ufo-sightings-over-britain-double-in-a-single-year3-mail-online_1234556845921

Nick Pope seems to come out with amazing statements, but not back them up with anything substantial, or base them on any facts at all.

His latest statement to The sun’s article ” Google Unearthed“  (posted 30th March, 2009) was:

” Yesterday baffled ufologist Nick Pope said he was “very excited” by the image, which he labelled “truly fascinating”.
He added: “It appears to show nine objects flying in near perfect formation. About the only thing I know that can do this is the Red Arrows — and it’s not them” ” (extract from article). Ironically at Above top secret, there is a possibility that they are either jets, (including red arrows) or balloons : see Here and Here . Also they point out that google started mapping London out in 2008. One possibility could be that it was the Queen’s birthday fly past see here. Again i say possibilities, and as such should be presented as such.

English: The pilots of the Red Arrows line up for an official photo after their display. Taken by Adrian Pingstone at Kemble Airfield, Gloucestershire, England in June 2004 and released to the public domain. (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

You can see the google map in question here . I did notice that the next camera to the right, has (looking at the skyline) an aerial dissected half way up, and am unsure how this was caused (unless it was collected at two separate times, for instance).

Anyway, it soon finds its way into many newspapers and media outlets, but why? Again, i say why is this an amazing image….. to me one answer could be that it’s an image malfunction. I’m not saying that it should not be discussed, but the way it is being put ‘out there ‘ is getting sad, and there are better cases that should be discussed/ talked about in a rational way, but i guess it does not sell papers.

I will within the next week or so, put together an article, on why i have come to this conclusion about Nick Pope, and give my reasons with background information.

For example, i wrote about  ” Is nick Pope being GULLable towards UFO sighting? ” in which the image was clearly a seagull (or Unidentified Feathered Object).

Although i’m not saying that you can get everything right, he does not seem to be learning from his mistakes, or even looking at the evidence with a clear head, and reasserting his answers to these questions.

Of course, sometimes all you can give are a series of alternatives (ie what they could be), and leave it at that.

Therefore we have to ask what are his motives in all this? Maybe i’m reacting to strongly to all this, possibly, but i do believe it is more sensationalism again.

windturbineartufoThe Sun newspaper is also proving to not be interested in the truth about UFOs whatsoever, and sooner the rest of the media realize this the better. For instance, the latest wind Turbine incident is a good example of hype by them.

I would be interested to find out what you think of Nick Pope? is he a reliable source of information on UFOs, and Ufology as a whole.

I only bring this whole subject up, because i wonder why some  people are surprised, when they ask ” why is ufology not taken seriously”.

This asked some serious questions back in 2009, and they are still relevant now…..

Also similar questions were raised at forgetomori  (in 2009) ” UFO fleet menaces east London?nah ” among other blogs.

Main Building—The Headquarters of the Ministry...

Main Building—The Headquarters of the Ministry of Defence, Whitehall, Westminster, London (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

So let’s backtrack a bit here, and examine Nick’s time at the MOD.

Nick Pope claims that he  was the man “who used to run the British Government’s UFO Project” (from 1991-1994); and that he was responsible for these ufo reports. Please see Dr David Clarke for a detailed description in his blog article “Open Skies- closed Files” . This asks serious question of Nick’s involvement in the role he played with UFO’s and the MOD.

SecretfileIt is telling that the MOD have mentioned that there is no such thing as the UFO project. Many more questions arise from this as well? mainly what role did he play? why does he block details? has he something to hide..was he really only there in a part-time capacity? Also over at ufo-blog.co.uk the same analysis has taken place for this article please see here .

So basically what I’m saying is that there is very strong evidence to suggest,  he was a low-level clerk at the MOD, that i believe was only part-time … he lives on the Mulder image, and he still claims he was the chief investigator without backing this up with any hard proof.

ufo online55555After he left the MOD in the 1990′s, he mentioned that he had never seen anything out of the ordinary. Recently this has all changed-to suit his own agenda – money talks.

He also spends a lot of time contradicting himself, never really researching properly…but unfortunately the media love it, as it sells papers (and most of the tabloids are not interested in the truth).Nick Pope also loves it as it keeps him in the limelight.

Other links of interest  :

*** this was dated from 1999 and is very telling about alot of things that Nick Pope said in the UFO magazine at the time, plus other comments. The link can be seen at  sightings (rense.com) and confirms alot of the contradictions that are mentioned above *****.

For example:

Although Nick Pope hasn’t to my knowledge responded to these questions and is of course absolutely under no obligation to, I have now received a reply from ‘Secretariat(Air Staff)2a’ concerning some of the aforementioned questions.

The Ministry state:

“Mr Pope was employed as an Executive Officer in Secretariat (Air Staff) 2. His post was designated Sec(AS)2a.

The main duties of the post concern non-operational RAF activities overseas and diplomatic clearance for military flights abroad”.

It would therefore appear that Nick Pope’s principal function was generally more mundane than “researching and investigating UFO sightings, alien abductions, crop circles, animal mutilations and any other weird and wonderful reports that came my way” [extract from article].

UFO Talk – No hope for pope

Colin Andrew’s concerns here

Richard Dolan calls out Nick Pope

bad UFOs – Skepticism, UFOs and the Universe

Ok, I’ll lay it on the line and say that i have not been a fan of Nick Pope for quite a while. His brand of sensationalism is a joke and makes Ufology look pathetic.

I hear you say, that i should keep my prejudice out of this, and i usually do, however I actually despair with the whole Nick pope image. If nothing else it gives Ufology an even worse reputation than it already has.

UK UFO sightings [April 2009] Updated regularly

Posted by dandare on April 12, 2009

ufo-online555551

I will try and keep this up to date, with all information from the UK.

Please check back from time to time, as this will be updated regularly…If you see something that i have missed, please contact me (thanks)…..

There has been an explosion of UK UFO activity this year, mainly due to the Sun (tabloid UK newspaper) who think they are the UFO EXPERTS, seeming to print anything remotely to do with UFOs (with no facts/sensationalism and mostly no TRUTH). Unfortunately, this now seems to be spreading to other National newspapers.ufo

Are they eventually going to make UFOLOGY a complete joke?

So, many of the sightings reported are sensationalized, with usually alot of information missing.

Please keep this in mind as you view these postings from the local and national press.

I’m afraid many also fail to follow up on their initial leads, and many reports just remain forgotten.

peterboroughjan09

Some incidents could be UFO balloons (please see:  http://dandare.wordpress.com/2007/05/19/ufo-balloons-what-are-they/ for more details, from a previous article). There are also many other IFOs ( Identified Flying Objects they could be as well).

However, as i have said before, i am not sure what value they are to any UFO research.

BBC “ Dr Who link to UFO sighting rise ” ** (all links with 2 stars relate to same article)

Nick Pope mentions that the increase in UK sightings is partly to do with chinese lanterns becoming more popular in this country; true.

However, he then starts going way off track with comments like :

dandare_avatar_createdMr Pope, who continues his research into the phenomena of UFOs on a private basis, said he believed the revitalisation of the Doctor Who franchise had made people more open to seeing UFOs ” (extract from article).

He then states that it is being covered on Newsnight (bbc2 indepth show on the news) and the SUN (which he works at). First off, i do believe that chinese lanterns have had a large impact on UFO sightings, but Doctor Who has not….this is total rubbish.

But hang on there is more …. he mentions:

“One case that springs to mind is the recent incident at RAF St Athan when a police helicopter was apparently nearly hit by a UFO.
“Another near collision happened last year over Birmingham when the pilot had to take evasive action to avoid hitting a UFO.
“This is why their investigation is important”
” (extract from article).

I’m afraid again i have to question these sightings, that THE SUN took a particular interest in. Where are the facts, and the data for this……..They usually never seem to follow up with any more evidence, but just carry on saying its a definate UFO sighting…..or they have selective data of a sentational kind if they do follow up!

This should be retitled ” Media are the reason for UFO sightings rise

Nick Pope and UFOs: What’s going on!

Recent UK ufo sightings in 2008…. a reality check please!

Posted by dandare on July 4, 2008

In case you might not be aware, the Uk has been inundated with UFO sightings for a while now; the start of the year seemed to be normal, with a standard amount of reported UFO sightings in the media, and online.

So it seems the catalyse came on May 14th, when the MOD released 8 ufo files (each one a pdf file, consisting of many sightings); they are still available for download from the National archives website (please see the national archives for the files you can download) however, now a small fee is charged. These cover the years 1978-1987….. thanks must go to David Clarke, Joe Mc Gonagle and Gary Anthony for actively pursuing the right for all of us to see these files. There will be more files to follow.

The media covered this, with some half decent reporting, to rather dubious reporting ..below is only a very small sample of the reports/articles written (so there was large media interest:

the BBC “Files released on UFO sightings” it mentions

They include accounts of strange lights in the sky and unexplained objects being spotted by the public, armed forces and police officers” and “Much of the previously classified paperwork is made up of correspondence from the public sent to government officials, such as the MoD and then-prime minister Margaret Thatcher” (extracts from article).

BBC “In pictures: The UFO files”

The today programme “UFO sightingsfiles released” … with media player (audio) 4 mins.

BBC News “Dear MOD: where is ET?” written by Dr. David Clarke…. it mentions:

For decades the Ministry of Defence kept what it knew about UFOs locked away in its archives. Now, the contents of what have been called Britain’s X-Files are finally being revealed. One of the UK’s leading UFO experts told Radio 4′s Today programme about his hunt.

The first eight of 160 MoD UFO files have been opened at the National Archives, thanks to the Freedom of Information Act” (extract from article).

Daily Telegraph “British government releases UFO files” including video (1min 53secs). it mentions:

The most comprehensive Government files on UFO activity are opened to the public for the first time today and they disclose that even air traffic controllers and police officers have seen mysterious craft in the skies over Britain” (extract from article).

Timesonline “HM Government has never been approached by people from outer space

Yet the files do show that the MoD conducted a rigorous investigation of every alleged sighting of a UFO until well into the 1980s. In a briefing note in 1979 the MoD wrote: “Her Majesty’s Government has never been approached by people from outer space.” But the Defence Intelligence Staff was given the task of following up sightings, interviewing witnesses, collating information and filing reports” (extract from article).

blogs.guardian.co.uk “Explore the X-files” it mentions:

Several sightings in the files are from police. At quarter past midnight on Christmas Day 1985, a group of 3 police officers in Woking were surprised by a white light descending on the Horsell area. The officers were apparently worried their report would not be taken seriously because Horsell Common features in HG Wells’ War of the Worlds as the place where the first Martians land” (extract from article).

news distribution service (NDS) “Ministry of Defence release X-files

Reuters “Green aliens, ufos said to visit

Aliens from outer space have been visiting Britain for years and UFO sightings doubled after the film Close Encounters was released in 1977, according to secret files collating reports by members of the public.

The alien craft come in all shapes, sizes and colors but their occupants are uniformly green, the Ministry of Defence files show” (extract from article).

The Guardian “The truth is out there: National Archives lifts lid on UFO files

The files consist of a variety of documents, including numerous individual sightings, accounts of investigations and briefings prepared by MoD staff for ministers on the subject. “There are a lot of conspiracy theories that have grown up about the military interest in UFOs. What we are getting to see in these papers are the actual facts,” said Dr David Clarke, a lecturer in journalism at Sheffield Hallam University, in a podcast prepared for the National Archives on the release” (extract from article). Included is a podcast at the bottom of the article.

The Independant “The truth really is out there as Britain’s X-files released”

What i liked, was this mentioned near the end “It will show that in April 1984 police in Edgware, north London, were called to investigate a light flashing “blue, white, green and pink”, followed by a “blinding white ball with a tail”. Women ran to their homes, screaming, with one declaring to officers: “I am not a nutter”” (extract from article).

news.scotsman.com “Truth is out there as government releases ufo files”

ACCOUNTS of bright lights in the sky and even alien abduction have been made public for the first time in a batch of “X Files” released by the Ministry of Defence.

Defence chiefs have kept files on 11,000 sightings dating back to the 1950s.Briefing documents for government ministers facing questions about policy on unidentified flying objects also form part of the release at the National Archives in Kew.Defence intelligence staff were more interested in checking that UFOs were not, in fact, signs of earthly covert spying missions by other countries, the documents reveal” (extract from article).

The sun “Brit ufo fever is flying sky high“… wins my reward for the most stupid ufo alleged photo!!!

*** MSN uk news “Britain’s X-files opened to the public” near the end it says

“”It’s a question of who you going to believe: your lying eyes or the government?” once remarked John Callahan, a former Federal Aviation Administration investigator, who said the CIA tried to hush-up the sighting of a huge illuminated ball four times the size of a jumbo jet in Alaska in 1987. You’ll forgive me if I have more faith in my 20/20 vision than I do in any elected representative” (extract from article).

*** M & C “Is there anything out there?”

They used to be stamped ‘Secret: For British Eyes Only’ – but on Wednesday files about the sighting of unidentified flying objects (UFOs) in the skies over Britain were made public for the first time” (extract from article).

*** commentisfree.guardian.co.uk      “ET alors?”

*** RINF.COM “MOD begins full UFO-files public release

Many of the MoD’s UFO files – including, probably, most of the good stuff – have already been revealed under Freedom of Information Act requests. In particular, the splendid conspiracy fodder surrounding the Rendlesham Forest incident of 1980 (“Britain’s Roswell”) has long been available, full of mysterious lights, strange marks left in the ground and traces of radiation. Even better, the cameras recording the British air-defence radar picture were switched off at the time, indicating an almost certain government conspiracy” (extract from article).

*** Time.com “Britain releases its X-files

*** this is dorset “Close encounters” a short article. Also a video link to regional (past UFO ) encounters? here .

*** this is local London “Croydon UFO sighting included in X-files

The Sanderstead resident recalled peeping out of her bedroom window at 3am, in June 1983, and seeing a large rectangular-shaped object passing slowly.

“There seemed to be no means of propulsion. The object was not being pushed, pulled, lifted or carried – its movement was silent,” she reported. She drew a picture of what she had seen and it appears in one of the eight files of reports released yesterday by the National Archives in Kew” (extract from article).

So obviously, this was now in the public eye, and alerted certain media, to the possible attraction of this type of news during silly season (thats around june – august, as there is usually not a load of news to report on).

So, reports started increasing, after the UFO files were released by the MOD, but what gained world attention again, was the article by tabloid newspaper “the Sun” (a dubious paper at best for actual facts, in all regards). The article was “Cops chase a UFO over Cardiff”

“The incident happened as the helicopter was returning to the MoD’s St Athan base near Cardiff, where it is stationed. The chopper was at 500ft and waiting to land when the crew saw the UFO speeding towards them from below.

A source said: “It closed in at great speed, aiming straight at the helicopter, “The chopper had to swerve sharply to avoid being hit. The guys said if they’d stayed where they were, they’d be dead – it would’ve been a direct hit.

“They are convinced it was a UFO. It sounds far-fetched, but they know what they saw” (extract from article). The incident took place on the 7th june 2008 it was reported by the sun.

However, it seems that the date of the incident is not clear cut (either the 7th or 8th june), and there seems to be two versions to the sighting…. that was soon relayed to the other tabloid papers, then the other major streamline papers, and soon it hit the world media, who clamoured for information.

There is a basis of truth in this incident, but how much has been added, is the question.

The official response was “unidentified aircraft” which is interesting… although this could also be not telling us a hell of a lot.

drawing by “the Sun” below

I also disagree with Nick (gullable)Pope, how do we know that the helicopter had a near miss with a UFO….this is from the sun newspaper (no source available) who have papers to sell in the silly season (and not interested in facts). I’m not dismissing it totally (but i find the whole thing unlikely at best), just that this might take on a totally new identity (oops it already has).

All types of both local and national newspapers, started reporting about recent sightings (and it seemed like open season-as it were), but quite a few are quite obviously IFO (Identified Flying Objects); the majority being ufo balloons/lanterns…. and trying to find the legitimate incidents from the rest is proving differcult.

This is a  big shame….I did see some articles, for instance of the Liverpool lights incident, recently, and that it was an “invasion”…. as i live not too far away from the city, most people are completely unaware of this invasion. It was a complete fabrication, and nowhere near reality.

What is an even bigger shame is that “The Sun” seem to think they are now experts on the subject, and have their own dedicated page to UFO’s….. personally, i wish they would leave the UFO subject well alone…

I will dwell on this some more, at a later date, but felt i had to mention something, about the recent spike in UFO sightings in the UK.

What effect will this have on Ufology when it all dies down? i do not know? I am not blaiming the public though, as i genuinely believe alot are reporting sightings, that they really want an answer too (although you are also inevitably going to get your fair share of hoaxes). Some ufologists seem to also like to jump on the bandwagon, and hype up the situation…. this to is not a great help.

What we should be looking for is the facts…. but they too might be illusive….

Ufo Update

Posted by dandare on January 7, 2008

Hello and welcome to this weeks updates…..

ufos

Remember, not long ago, we had the “Dorito” ufo, well the same local newspaper has another catchy (not) article entitled “Mystery arrowhead UFO spotted” (posted 3rd january 2008 – although for a minute, i thought it had something to do with Alien Archeaology). It mentions

“Householders described the object as looking like an “arrowhead” with three orange lights arranged in the shape of an isosceles triangle”(extract from article); oh well, at least the headlines are becoming quite entertaining…. cannot wait for the next one!

Photobucket

hfxnews has “Lots of speculation, still no explaination for ufo” (posted 4th january 2008); it says that “A video of an object trailing a dark, spiralling plume behind it and plummeting toward Prince Edward Island’s Northumberland Strait remains the focus of intense speculation” (extract from article). The incident took place on 29th december,2007.

stealth

We are back to standard reported articles again; in the eveningleader.co.uk it reports “More people report seeing UFOs flying over county” (posted 4th january,2008). They are all of the orange light variety, and give mention to quite a few different witness accounts. I’ll leave this up to you, as to what you think these are.

ufo online

The eveningleader is back again (7th january 2008) with “Residents line up to confirm UFO sightings“; what makes me smile, about alot of these type of reports, is that they all categorically say, that they are teatotal or did not have a drop to drink at all….

Photobucket

Fox6.com has “Could the UFO in the San Diego skies be sky lanterns?”  (3rd january 2008).

Photobucket

The observer has “The truth is out: X-Files go public” (6th january 2008)…..with no mention of Nick Pope in the whole article… Basically if you are unaware the ufo files held by the MOD will become available to the public (online) starting from spring 2008; but will take 3 years to complete.

Photobucket

In theargus.co.uk “Ufo spotted zooming over downs” (3rd january 2008)…. its back to the mention of “little green men”…… they say it might have been similar to that seen in cornwall (i’m pretty sure they do not mean of the feathered kind, sighted by “the sun newspaper”).  Not much to go on in this post.

Photobucket

Northantset.co.uk claims “Amazing ufo footage” (2nd january 2008), but i wouldn’t hold your breath on this one however.

Also in the news

countywidenews.com has “Will a new year bring new visitors” (3rd january 2008).

We have at Associated Content “UFOs, spirits and mind control” (7th january 2008).

Lastly, “Explore alien worlds at Catawba science centre” (2nd january 2008).

Is nick Pope being GULLable towards ufo sighting?

Posted by dandare on January 3, 2008

Admittedly, this comes from The sun newspaper, not known for its accuracy, but which reports on a ufo sighting in Cornwall, with a image of the alleged UFO.

This can be seen in the oh so great, meaningful  titled “oooh arrr not alone anymore” (posted 1st january 2007).

The image which they blow up for everyone to see (which is helpful, admitedly), is clearly a seagull, (you can even see the wing of the bird in flight, yes its blurred but it’s there). Also its another case of “i didn’t see it at the time, but”….

In the article it mentions “”Nick, formerly the official Ministry of Defence UFO analyst, said: “If I was still there I’d be looking at this very closely. The object looks structured, symmetrical and metallic. This man has caught something very interesting indeed””.

Michael Soper, of the Contact International UFO group, agreed: “This does appear genuine. Digital photos can be doctored but everything about it appears consistent.” (extract taken from article). I will give both of them the benefit of a possible, misquote or out of context statement…..and i can understand to an extent that they may have believed otherwise (i have also made mistaken identities to sightings), but this is quite an obvious one…

What do you think; am i being a bit harsh on this? do you believe its a ufo and why?

Why are the newspapers jumping on the ufo bandwagon again; easy… they do not want to know the truth, and couldn’t care less, as long as it sells papers. What it does do, is give us a bad name again.

UPDATE: 4th January 2007
To roughly show why i have come to think it is a seagull…. i have pointed out the features in the photo below (apologies for the out of focus photogragh from the newspaper, and not too well labelled representation). Please also see “cornwall ufo – its a bird damn it“.

DOCUMENTARY + GOVERNMENT RECORDS ON UFOs

To kick us off, there is a handy link to Area 51 (groom lake), from FAS (Federation of American Scientists): http://www.fas.org/irp/overhead/groom.htm  It goes into detail about the imagery available, an overview of the area, handy links to other sites (some now are not working), and images of Area 51 through the years, near the bottom of the article. It seems to have been written in 2000, but still handy for anyone interested in this topic.   Imagery of groom lake can be seen here .
